The only place where I recall anything about tattoos is in the OT laws in Leviticus
Leviticus 19:28
" 'Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.

This particular reference is unclear though. It seems that God is making this law based upon magic/necromancy/mediumship practices. People are not to cut themselves on behalf of the dead (ritual cutting of some sort) or put tatoo marks on themselves because He is God. Suggests that the tattoos are related to the same reasons for the body-cutting.

However, I'd ultimately say this: Jesus died to set us free from the confines of the law. And while everything and anything is now Permissible, that doesn't make it A GOOD IDEA.

Pray about it and ask God what He thinks for you personally. And then do whatever HE says. Ultimately, He knows best. And look at WHY you want tattoos as well. Motive matters.

The following is a thought i had while reading through this, and not something i have thought a lot about so use your own judgment while reading this (witch you should no matter what you read...(and before anyone comments on bad spelling, I am Norwegian, English is my second language, thank you))

Back to the subject:
You could if you wanted to try to find something for or against everything in this life in the Bible (especially if you read it out of context), but for most subjects due to the diversity of life, there are simply too many to discuss even in the greatest book. Just think how large the Bible would be if every single part of culture, human behavior, psychology, food and all other parts of life were discussed? It would definitely be too long for anyone to finish in a lifetime.

The Bible has a law inscribed, as well as prophesies, stories, history, tables, even some medical knowledge (and a lot more), but in the end, you wont find answers to every little question; this world is not black and white, and every situation has its own story. The Bible is not from this world though and can therefore be regarded as a standard in Christian life. For example in the case of tattoos. We could refer to typical verses, these references have already been made (and regarding this subject the Bible is actually quite clear in my opinion)) or we can open our view and start to make decisions based upon what the Bible tells us and how God speaks to us through it. God gave us a brain, and we should use it. We should also pray for wisdom, like king Salomon, one of the wisest men to have walked this earth (even he fell into sin).

For example the bible speaks of this World not being our world, that our home is in heaven. If that is so, then why should we bother marking ourselves with things to remind us of this world? If you want a tattoo of a cross or a fish etc. then search yourself for the reason you want such a marking on your body. Think ahead how it might affect your life, and those around you today, tomorrow, ten years from now, twenty years from now.

Even making a "christian" mark on your body could be driven by your ego, so look into yourself "am i wanting to do this solely to praise God, or to make me look cool/fit in/feel good?". We are self-centered beings and most of what we do (yes even as Christians) is for ourselves. When i do the dishes, clean the whole kitchen and smile "I did a good job" I am still thinking about myself, and how nice it will be to get a compliment from those who see how well I did (i am not saying doing the dishes is a sin, nor being happy for being able to help out, its just an example to make you think).

Another totally different direction to take this is; what is this telling others? In Japan for example, the only poeple who get tatoos are the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia. In "onsen", earth water hot baths for example poeple with tatoos are forbidden entrance. In different coultures tatoos and symbols can mean different things.
